Pasta is one of the most versatile and accepted weaning foods — soft, manageable texturally, and an excellent vehicle for a wide range of nutritious ingredients. These 8 recipes work from 7 months onward.
Which Pasta for Babies?
Short pasta shapes work best for early weaning: orzo, small shells (conchiglie), small fusilli, or ditalini are ideal for spoon-feeding. Penne and rigatoni are good finger food pasta from 8–9 months. Cook until very soft (well past ‘al dente’) for young babies — test by squashing a piece between your fingers. From 10–12 months as chewing develops, slightly firmer textures are appropriate.
8 Baby Pasta Recipes
1. Butter and Parmesan (From 7 Months)
The simplest pasta: cooked small pasta, a small knob of unsalted butter, a generous grating of parmesan. Parmesan is one of the highest-calcium foods available. Despite its strong flavour, it’s low in sodium compared to most cheeses when used as a seasoning.
2. Hidden Vegetable Tomato Sauce
Blend 1 tin tomatoes, 1 roasted red pepper, 1 grated courgette, 1 grated carrot, 1 clove garlic. Simmer 15 minutes. Stir through pasta. Iron from the vegetables, vitamin C from tomatoes. Make in large batches and freeze in portions.
3. Creamy Avocado Pasta
Blend 1 ripe avocado with the juice of half a lemon and a splash of olive oil. Toss through warm pasta. Serve immediately (avocado discolours quickly). Rich in healthy fats and vitamin E.
4. Pea and Spinach Pesto
Blend 100g cooked peas, large handful spinach, 2 tbsp olive oil, a little parmesan. Stir through pasta. The bright green colour is appealing and the mild flavour is well-accepted. Iron from spinach and peas.
5. Lentil Bolognese
Fry onion, garlic, carrot. Add 200g red lentils, 1 tin tomatoes, vegetable stock. Simmer 25 minutes. Blend to preferred texture and toss with pasta. Excellent iron-rich alternative to meat bolognese.
6. Salmon and Cream Cheese
Cook 1 salmon fillet, flake carefully (remove all bones). Stir into pasta with 2 tbsp full-fat cream cheese until melted and creamy. Rich in DHA omega-3. Ready in 15 minutes.
7. Chicken and Broccoli
Boil pasta with broccoli florets for the last 3–4 minutes. Drain. Toss with shredded cooked chicken, a drizzle of olive oil, and a squeeze of lemon. Simple, nutritious, uses leftover chicken efficiently.
8. Egg and Pea Pasta
Boil pasta, add frozen peas for the last 2 minutes. Drain. Return to the pan with a small knob of butter. Crack in 1–2 eggs and stir over low heat until the egg is just cooked and coating the pasta (like a simplified carbonara without salt). Quick, protein-rich, universally accepted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is pasta too carb-heavy for babies?
No — carbohydrates are an important energy source for rapidly developing babies. The concern is the quality of the carbohydrate and what accompanies it. A pasta dish with a protein and vegetable component is a balanced, appropriate meal. Wholemeal pasta provides additional fibre and slightly more iron than white pasta.
Can babies have pasta every day?
Variety is the goal rather than avoidance of specific foods. If pasta appears several times a week with varied sauces, proteins, and vegetables, it contributes to a varied and nutritious diet. Rotate with other grain options (rice, oats, quinoa, bread) for broader nutritional coverage.
